Who says a beach wedding has to be a casual affair?  Ballgowns do surprising well in the sand as do heels (as long as you have a chunky heel and an ankle strap).  Your wedding day should be a reflection of your personality and style!  Feeling formal?  I say go for it!

Jen & Courtney #1(Blog)
First wedding of the year at theJen & Courtney #4 (Blog) beautiful Wrightsville Beach Holiday Inn Sunspree. One of my favorite things about this property is the dramatic staircase down to the beach. The hotel is shaped like a giant “V” with a pool in the middle and staircases on either side which lead from the third floor dining deck all the way down to the ocean. A two-staircase design is perfect for weddings as it provides beachgoers an alternate route to and from the hotel during the ceremony. From just inside the third floor lobby a bride can watch all the action below; guest seating, bridal party processional and even theJen & Courtney #2 (Blog) groom waiting anxiously at the end of the aisle for a first glimpse of his new bride. However, the glass has a slight tint so those on the beach can’t see the bride. I also love the gazebos at the beach end of each staircase, which create a beautiful frame for the bride to walk through.

Typically, it is the bride’s walk down these stairs, which tops my list of favorite moments at Holiday Inn weddings.  However at Jen and Courtney’s wedding it was the couple’s recessional back up the stairs which I loved most about this special day.

Although Wrightsville Beach’s renourishment efforts were just completed in June 2014, we have already seen the shoreline begin to shrink. So to stay out of the tide line during certain times of day we have started setting up our pavilions  a bit closer to the dunes. With less beach space and a record number of guests participating in the Jen & Courtney #3 (Blog) bubble send-off we elected to line everyone up the stairs starting at the beach and ending at the access to the pool. With bubbles flying the happy couple walked through this impromptu “tunnel of love” on their way to the reception.

Megan & Marty(Blog) Thank goodness for MEgan & Marty #2(Blog) beach renourishments and flexible brides! Maintaining a sandy beach coastline is a never-ending project that requires a great deal of time and resources. Every few years the state must battle Mother Nature to keep Wrightsville Beach from flooding. Yes, it’s expensive, but for those faithful who live and vacation here it is certainly well worth the price.

The 2014 beach renourishment schedule, though badly needed caused a few issues for several spring brides. They had to change locations in order to stay out of the path of the massive trucksMegan & Marty #1(Blog) and people sized pipes. After it was all finished the project added nearly 100 yards of new sand to the beach.

Fortunately Megan was a local bride, so she had ample opportunity to explore other options and select a new location outside the construction zone. Ultimately she and Marty settled on Access #6. Located a short distance from the Holiday Inn Sunspree, (site of the couple’s reception) Access #6 is a lush and secluded entry with absolutely no parking. Luckily Noni and her crew were kind enough to shuttle guests to and from the ceremony in the Holiday Inn van.

As of 4/26/14 Renourishment the beach renourishment effort had yet to reach Access #6, which made set-up a bit challenging. The beach was so narrow that we ended up arranging the chairs in 3 long rows and curving them inward to create a more intimate feel. This also kept our pavilion safe from the approaching tide. I have to say I loved the way it photographed but I’m relieved to know next time were here we should have much more space to work.

Krystal & Stephen #1(Blog)
Krystal and Stephen’s wedding was one of the most fun weddings of the year. In fact, by the end of the ceremony my Krystal & Stephen #2 (Blog) cheeks were actually sore from smiling. The groom and his groomsmen keep us entertained until the moment they walked down the aisle. The bride was so genuinely happy and excited that I couldn’t help but smile in her presence.

Working at the Holiday Inn Sunspree is always a great experience, however, this wedding was extra special. Noni went out of her way to put the bride’s mind at ease, providing several good options for an indoor ceremony and arranging for us to have a second practice at this back-up location. Fortunately, good weather prevailed and we did not have to move inside, Krystal & Stephen #4(Blog)but it was certainly nice to have an alternative. This wedding was also the first opportunity we had to work with The Three Divas and I have to say it was truly a delightful experience. I couldn’t help but feel a sence of comrodary with these high energy, ultra enthusiastic ladies. They did a beautiful job decorating our pavilion and kept us smiling all afternoon.

Ashely & Jason 1(Blog)Ashley & Jason 2(Blog)Wrightsville Beach locals Ashley and Jason didn’t have to look far to find the perfect location for their wedding. The Holiday Inn Supree proved to be the perfect spot; close to home, oceanfront and large enough to accommodate 150 of their closest friends and family. Ashley & Jason 3(Blog)Favorite moments included the mothers each sharing special readings and “Best Dog” Sailor delivering the wedding rings to the bride and groom.

IMG_9999_edited-2Saturday’s wedding drew quite a crowd. IMG_9983 Hotel guests lined the boardwalk and perched in the hotel balconies for a chance to get a glimpse of the bride.

The couple really wanted to include all five grandparents in the processional, but were concerned that they may have trouble navigating IMG_0020_edited-1 the stairs. So we drove them down to the public access and transported them to the back of the aisle in a beach wheelchair. When it was time for the processional to begin, each grandparent was escorted down the aisle by one of the bride’s brothers. How sweet is that!

Jay was beaming from ear to ear as his Alee & Jay 2 edited
bride made her entrance to “You Had Me from Hello” by Kenny Chesney. It was such a sweet moment! One cool feature about this wedding was the mother of the groom also served as the maid of honor. As luck would have it, Jay’s two favorite ladies are also really good friends!

This was also the first time I got to work with photographer Brandi Hunt. Brandi is an experienced photographer but relatively new to beach wedding photography. She was great to work with and I am excited that she had her highlight photos up in time for this posting.

Tera & Jeff 2_edited-1Saturday marked the start of wedding season. It was a bit earlier than usual, but much warmer than expected. Tera & Jeff 966EditedIn lieu of a traditional wedding party, the couple opted to include their parents and children in the ceremony. The groom’s father carried the rings and his two sons brought them forward for the ring exchange. Then the mothers brought the sand forward for the sand ceremony. Tera & Jeff_edited-1To complement the bride’s bouquet and bring out her accent color, we lined the aisle with yellow Fuji mums on shepherd hooks, added yellow parasols behind the back row of chairs and tied yellow chair sashes to the pavilion. The most memorable moment of the wedding was certainly the passionate “first kiss” which drew cheers and applause from wedding guests and beachgoers alike.
